  • What is Superior Dry Goods?
Superior Dry Goods is a small business owned and operated by Beth Scott from Eugene, Oregon. Beth has a Masters degree in Environmental Science from the University of Arizona. Her artistic background includes theatrical costume design, graphic design projects, and writing haiku in her spare time. Superior Dry Goods is committed to creating premium, sustainable body products and gifts using the finest ingredients. Every product we make combines these high standards with whimsical graphic design elements that borrow from vintage, retro, and antique ephemera. Our collection of balms, candles, stationery and more are designed not only for gift-giving, but also for treating yourself to the most authentically hand-crafted items available.
  • What Does "Handmade" Mean?"
At Superior Dry Goods, handmade means that a product is made by an individual who is self-employed or employed by a small business, and that the production process is done by people, not machines. This is not to say that machinery cannot be employed by an artisan who creates handmade items; this is the 21st Century, after all. Items handmade in-house by Superior Dry Goods include everything from the printing of our stationery, the designing, folding and construction of our card and match boxes, formulating and pouring our own balms, salves, and candles. Even most of our labels are made by hand (on recycled paper) to avoid using sticker labels. We believe the best things are done with care, and that philosophy applies to everything we do here.
  • Is every component that you sell made in the U.S.A.?
We’d love that. However, in the global economy there is often a choice to be made between buying recycled products, or buying products made in the U.S.A. Superior Dry Goods makes every effort to source our materials from U.S. suppliers and manufacturers. The country of origin (materials and production) will be listed with items, when that information is available.
  • Do you accept custom orders?
Yes, Superior Dry Goods can accommodate many custom orders for personal use, and wholesalers for re-sale (keeping our Brand on the products). Because everything is designed and printed or hand-stamped in-house, our templates can be modified to include personalization on stationery or product labels. Personalizations may be used for such things as weddings, anniversaries, holiday cards, or any other occasion that you wish. Please allow up to six weeks for custom orders. Many customizations can be produced faster than this, but larger or complicated orders will take more time. Please contact info@superiordrygoods.shop for wholesale and special order inquiries.
  • What are your shipping rates?
Most US orders under $75.00 (USD) will have a flat shipping rate of $3.95 which includes standard domestic ground shipping. Occasionally, we offer promotions for reduced shipping rates. Orders over $75.00 receive free shipping (standard domestic ground shipping). Expedited shipping may be available, and will appear as an option during check-out. Shipping policies are subject to change at any time, and will apply to items in carts that have not checked out prior to the change. For international orders, actual shipping costs will apply. VAT and other applicable import taxes are the responsibility of the buyer.
  • When will you ship my order?
We are a small business, and value our employee’s family lives. We are not open for order fulfillment on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays. Orders placed online during these times will be filled beginning the next available weekday. Please allow up to two business days for orders to be filled, and additional time for your item to arrive via shipping. NOTE: Due to COVID-related supply chain limitations and postal delivery delays, there may be an additional few days before orders are fulfilled and arrive. These delays are beyond our control, and we appreciate your understanding.
  • Do matches take longer to ship?
Matches, being flammable, cannot be shipped by air. Therefore, only Ground delivery services are available for orders containing matches. That being said, First Class Ground shipping is running pretty quickly these days (mid-2022), and customers are reporting that they are pleased with the delivery times.
  • What is your returns policy?
At Superior Dry Goods, we really want you to be happy with your purchase. We back the quality of our goods with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If, for any reason, you are unhappy with your item in the first 30 days after you receive it, we will work with you to provide a solution. Please email info@superiordrygoods.shop with the order number and “Return Request” in the heading. Include a description of your concerns (pictures may be requested in some cases), and what type of solution you would prefer: replacement or refund. All items, unless specified by Superior Dry Goods, must be returned to us before a refund or store credit is delivered. If, upon inspection, the item is found to be defective, a refund will be offered (including shipping, if applicable). If the item is not defective, but is just not what you expected or you do not like it, we may offer either a store credit or a replacement, and you will pay for both the return and replacement shipping. Exceptions to the return policy: Any balm or butter that has been affected or damaged due to outside temperatures during shipping (or after arrival) is not covered by our standard return policy. If your balm arrives damaged by heat or cold due to handling by the shipping carrier, please email info@superiordrygoods.shop and describe the situation.
  • Is everything you sell Biodegradable?
We make every effort to provide our customers with 100% biodegradable items. Occasionally, the inclusion of a small percentage of non-biodegradable materials is unavoidable. Although manufacturers, worldwide, are increasing the number of biodegradable options, the process is ongoing, and sometimes slow to reach certain industries. Adhesives, sticker backings, glue dots, plastic working parts on bottles and tubes, and some components of display boxes are a few examples. Rather than avoid doing business in the face of less than 100% biodegradable options, Superior Dry Goods puts every effort into making eco-positive choices whenever possible.
  • Are your product packaging and containers made from 100% recycled content?
Almost everything. Some items are made using less than 100% recycled content, and others are made from sustainable (not recycled) materials. Examples are glass bottles, metal lids, and many other materials that are not generally considered recycled content industries. Most of these items are fully recyclable, however. We also encourage the reuse and repurposing of jars and other containers.
  • Are all your paper products made from 100% recycled content?
Some stationery (paper) products may not be 100% recycled, but generally will not contain less than 30% recycled content. All product descriptions include the recycled content of the paper. The reason for this is that sometimes materials become available to us that we did not purchase (i.e. sample materials included by our suppliers at no cost). We believe in the three “R”s, and Reusing items is very important to us.
  • Why are my items not sealed in a protective plastic film?
We care about hygiene and personal safety, but do not believe in plastic wrapping. Our items have carefully designed packaging that protects them for shipping. Our lip balms and beard balms are packaged in recycled paper boxes and sealed with adhesive, for your safety.
  • What is the shelf-life of your lip balms?
Our lip balms are preservative-free, all-natural products. Big companies use all kinds of chemicals to make their products last a long time. Even then, however, a commercial lip balm may change in consistency over time. We have field-tested our natural lip balms for changes in consistency and quality over a period of over 12 months. We have found that our natural beeswax balms can sometimes form a slightly "dry" layer over the top of the balm, which melts almost immediately when it comes into contact with your lips. Using the balm daily or every-other day will practically eliminate this from occurring. In any case, it does not alter the effectiveness of our healing balms. We suggest that you use your lip balms within 12-14 months. Of course, balms may be used after this time; just use your best judgement. For questions or concerns about your natural lip balm, please email info@superiordrygoods.shop. We want you to be happy, and will answer your questions and/or resolve any issues that you might have.
  • What is the shelf-life of your beard balms?
Our beard balms are preservative-free, all-natural products, and they hold up well over time. We provide a scoop with our beard balms to reduce “hand contact” with the product, which reduces exposure to germs that could possibly break down natural products. We suggest that you use your beard balm within 14 months. Balms may be used after this time; just use your best judgement. For questions or concerns about your natural beard balm, please email info@superiordrygoods.shop. We want you to be happy, and will answer your questions and/or resolve any issues that you might have.
  • What's up with this cardboard lip balm tube?
We don’t like plastic tubes. First, because they are not environmentally sustainable. Second, because they don’t hold as much product as our cardboard tubes. Third, even if plastic tubes were the same size, there’s always “lost” product at the bottom of the tube, where the twist bottom traps a significant amount of balm. To use our tubes, just press your finger up into the bottom and move the balm upwards (like a “push pop”). If you overdo it and press up too much, you can gently press it down with your finger, or try putting the cap back on and pressing it back down like that. WARNING: Do not attempt to press the balm back down in high heat situations. Put the balm in the refrigerator for a few minutes to cool it down before attempting to return it to the tube. Cardboard is not waterproof, of course. Please do not submerge your lip balm in water or store it in a wet environment. If you get some water on your lip balm tube, just wipe it off. It will be fine. All lip products melt in a hot car. Please don’t leave your lip balm in a hot car.
  • My cardboard lip tube is getting darker...?
Our cardboard lip balm tubes are porous, because they are not sealed with plastic. So, when lip balm or other oils or waxes come into contact with the brown paper, it darkens just like a drop of oil darkens any paper. When you apply lip balm, your lips will naturally touch the outside rim of the tube, thus darkening the cardboard over time. However, if you notice the entire tube turning dark (i.e. all the way down to the bottom), then it’s likely that it is stored in a place that is too warm, and the balm is getting melted. For best results please store balms at temperatures between 50-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • My lip balm is not sealed in plastic. Is it safe?
We care about hygiene and personal safety, but do not believe in plastic wrapping. Our lip balms are packaged in recycled paper boxes and sealed with adhesive, for your safety.
  • Are your candles 100% beeswax?
Yes. Our wax is sourced from a US honey maker, and is minimally processed. Only pure cappings wax goes into our pure beeswax candles. Some exceptions include our Outdoor Candles (i.e. Citronella & Lemon Ecalyptus Buckets), which include a percentage of coconut oil and essential oils. These additions allow for a faster fragrance "throw," which is important when you're trying to get your barbeque started, and you want your mosquito candle working *right now*!
  • Where does your beeswax come from?
We source our wax from American honey suppliers, who sell beeswax as a by-product of their honey-making business.
  • Who makes your beeswax candles?
We pour our own beeswax candles in-house.
  • What are the ingredients used in your products?
